Kiah (KEIRA JANG) has just turned 18 and lives with her mother. Her father was not much more than a sperm donor, which Kiah doesn’t really understand. Kiah is a skillful drawer. She inherited the talent from her mother but doesn’t consider herself an artist. She is a beautiful young woman but is not yet comfortable in her own skin. She is miserable about having to become a Documentor.

Daniel Boyer (JOEL OULETTE) is 20 years old and has been a Documentor for two years. His mother, Beth, gave birth to him shortly after her tour as a witness, when she was 19. His birth was a difficult one. Daniel was very premature and was born with a hole in his heart. His mother did not survive his birth. According to the new constitution, birth was not encouraged, but life is revered, so pre-natal care was minimal while care from post-natal to death was state of the art. Daniel was raised by the State, knows that every day he is alive is a minor miracle, and tries to put a positive spin on everything.

Ellie (SANDRA OH), Kiah’s mother, was also a witness. She was part of the first-year program, so Kiah has been groomed for the role. Like Kiah’s subjects, Ellie remembers a world where medicine, infrastructure and money could keep people alive beyond the age of 90. Ellie is getting her things in order. She wants Kiah to know that true planetary equality is worth dying for – the cause she fought so hard for as a youth.
